Tuesday: The Nyeri Slums

We left the Kentmere with the promise that we would return on Thursday.    Tuesday proved to be a day of great paradox, challenge, and awesomeness of God's creation.   First the challenge,  we visited the OVC (Orphans and Vulnerable Children's Ministry going on through Nyeri Baptist Church where Peter and Elisabeth serve).  The ministry is serving the slum area just below the church.   The slums developed by the river on the site of a former quarry.    Bernard provided Tom with a history and overview of the OVC work in Nyeri.   We had the opportunity to meet three of the children who are in school because of the OVC ministry.  They are doing good in school.    Their lives have been transformed by the ministry in Christ's name.

We visited three homes.  They were very difficult visits as we met the children, one old grandmother who still collects plastic to provide support for her grandchildren.   Visiting the homes, we saw even the difference in the slum community in the lives of the people.   There are no pictures inside the homes.

The visits left an imprint on our hearts and minds that will not be forgotten.  In fact, the partnership and the property will help in responding to the challenges that we saw visiting the Nyeri Slums.
