Monday: Out of Africa but Staying in Amsterdam

We are currently in Amsterdam spending the night on Kenya Airways/KLM's dime. Due to a delayed flight out of Nairobi, we missed the last plane to the US. So, we are spending the night in Amsterdam. Tomorrow we hope to continue our safari home.

We are splitting up in Amsterdam due to changes made necessary by the missed flight. Septima heads to Atlanta and Bonnie and I head to Detroit and then Greenville. The trip has been great.

More pictures and details to follow. Can't wait to share about the Three Wise Women and their camel journey. Thank you for your prayers, encouragement, and support. From Amsterdam, it's goodnight!

Friday: The Holiday Bible Camp ends

Hard to believe that it's Friday! The Holiday Bible Camp can to an end with a record enorllment and participation over 260 each day. The most amazing thing is that we had craft and some academic material left over. After worrying about preparing for 150 and over 260 showed up placed. The Gatunguru team did a great job. They did not work in the tea fields or other business this week in order to help with the camp. They were super.

The camp was outstanding from our perspective. The Kenyans say that the camp was a hugh success. Again thank you for your prayers, encouragement, and support.

Thursday: Sun Shining Another Great Day

The 4 year olds maneuver through the "obstacle Course. They really enjoy the challenges of the games.

The sun was shining with a good breeze.

The Bible Story for today was from Matthew 2, the wise men coming to Jesus. The drama from the groups was outstanding.

In Septima's Academics group, the children brought notebooks and took notes. You can see the two girls on the second row. One of the students who graduated high school said that Septima's pictures were the same ones on the national exam. He said that this was a real benefit for the kids. Also, Peter, Septima's translator, who is a school teacher told us that the new curriculum for primary schools in Kenya included more sciences--one part of that was the senses. What a great advantage Septima's teaching gave the children. He was very excited.

Today during crafts the children made cinnamon gingerbread hanging decorations. The gingerbread body was made of sandpaper. The children "colored" the gingerbread boys with cinnamon sticks. Then for eyes, miniatures M&M's and nose was "Red Hots". The children had a great time.

Wednesday: Everything Going Great

Hard to imagine how concerned we were about the camp and how things would go on Monday when we learned of the additional 100+ children. Everything is going so well. Today was even a bit hot with the sun shining all day.

Shirley and Linda provided a real first time moment for the children--Blow bubbles. The children had never seen blow bubbles and they loved them. Even the adults were amazed by them. Everyday, we are reminded how we take so much for granted in the US. Also, we are reminded how the simple things bring great joy and some of the most fascinating moments in life.

The theme for today was taste. The children really enjoyed Septima's class with all the "tasting".

The children made wooden fish with magnets. This related to the story of Jesus feeding the 5000 with loaves and fishes. They did a great job painting and designing their fish.

During recreation the younger children really enjoyed playing Drop the Handkerchief and Steal the Bacon.

The teenagers were introduced to Over and Under. This game is a favorite at every camp that we do in Kenya. Shirley tells us that the youth at Koinonia still play Over and Under as one of their favorite games. Meg Hunt introduced to game to them about five years ago. The teenagers really got into the camp with cheers.

Pastor Charles leads the children's ministry. Here he is explaining the needs of the camp for tomorrow during tea time. Margaret is enjoying her tea with milk and sugar. The tea is so hot that boiling water would cool it down.

Ralph, Australian businessman, and his daugther, Rachel, stopped by today to see the camp and after the camp to meet with the local pastors and church leaders about how to start and operate a successful business. Rachel really enjoyed working with the children. Bonnie encouraged her to stay the next couple of days and to join us on future trips. Bonnie and Septima review the day.

God Answers Prayer

Thank you so much for your prayers. The Holiday Bible Camp went so well Tuesday—great day! Total number ofchildren today was 252. From beginningto end, everything just flowed so smoothly. We had enough rice and beans for everyone—even the Mzungus (Swahili forwhite people). The theme today washearing.

The crafts that were prepared for 150 stretched to providefor the 252—it was amazing. Part of thecraft today used glitter. By the timethe teens came through they faces were covered in glitter. They were really sparkling.

The most amazing time today came during the “debriefing”session with the local children’s leaders and pastors. One teacher said, “I was amazed how we areusing a theme for the day that is covered in every area even crafts andrecreation. Every activity focused onhearing.” Two women shared that theyhad never heard using teaching on physical hearing to teach spiritual hearing. One children’s leader said, “We have taughtBible verses and stories and sung songs. Never did we think about using crafts or recreation as a part of thechildren’s camps—especially using them to teach the children. The children are having fun andlearning.” The sum of the comments werethat the teaching approach that we brought to them was so new and “out of thebox” that they had a hard time picking up on what we were doing. Today, they could see how it all workstogether.

After the meeting, Pastor Peter encouraged the Bible Campworkers to keep on working with the camp. When they work, they are not picking their tea, and they are not gettingmoney. Most of the workers, the tealiterally provides their daily bread. Iwas really struck by the sacrifice that they were making to participate in thecamp. Pastor Peter said, “I have a bagof potatoes at my house. If anyone doesnot have something to cook tonight—stop by my house for potatoes.” Pastor Peter like all of the pastors doesnot earn his living from being a pastor. They all do different jobs to provide for their families while doingfulltime pastoral work.

If you would like to be a part of life changing service, theopportunity is wide open. This HolidayBible Camp was three years in the making. Our goal is to do one camp per year in areas like Gatunguru. Actually, we hope to return to the areasomething next year. The children areout of school in April, August, and December. We are looking at a possible after Christmas trip in 2013.

Technical difficulties prevent new posts

First Day: 266 out of 150

No, this has nothing to do with learning Math, but describes the challenge for today. We rose early and enjoyed a great breakfast at the Blue Post. The Gatunguru church and area mission had never had more than 99 for any kind of children's or teen-ager meeting, so they were concerned that not many children would come. Our team was told to prepare for 150.

At breakfast this morning, Bernard received a call...the look on his face and the sound in his voice told us there was a big problem. Bernard was told that 150 children were registered, about another 100 were in the church yard, and another 300 HAD TO BE TURNED AWAY OUTSIDE.

Our final registration was 266. Boy, were we glad we didn’t have 150! Can you say scramble and improvise for what to do. Everything prepared changed.

Septima, Shirley and Linda had the real challenge of small rooms with groups as large as 80+ children. We rotated the groups by age. There were four groups. Our theme verse for the week is Psalm 139:14: “I will give thanks to you O Lord, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made…” Each day we focus on one of the five senses. Today was sight, our eyes.

Septima taught the Academic rotation. Unfortunately, we do not have very good pictures because her room is small. The space was so tight the pictures were difficult.

Shirley and Linda had the Craft rotation. They had to go to a rented room across the road from the church (off church property). Their job was to take craft projects designed for 150 and make them work for 266 children.

The teen-agers did a great job in Bible Study with Bonnie. They used creative expression to convey their understanding of the story of Bartimeaus. They wrote a poem, presented an original song and dance, created a wall mural, and performed a drama.

The number of children overwhelmed the church at first. In fact, they ran out of food for lunch and had to do some improvising for about 50 youth. We did not get lunch today.

We were to start at 9:00 a.m. with big group activities and some porridge for the children. Our rotations were to begin at 9:30 a.m. By 10:45 a.m., we were starting the rotations with no big group time. Lunch was to be served at 1 p.m. but did not start until 2 p.m. after we finished the rotations.

When we looked back on the day, we realized what a great day it was. The day began with a challenge beyond our imagination and expectation. It was tiring and stretched the whole team. After getting back and reorganizing, we cannot wait for the challenges of tomorrow. Thank you for your prayers, encouragement and support.

Let me be upfront on this. The cost of the Holiday Bible Camp was based on 150 children. Now with 266 children in attendance, the cost for the food has jumped significantly. Your financial support would also be appreciated and useful in meeting this need.

Hopefully, more photos will be added on Septima's Academics sessions and Shirley/Linda's Crafts sessions.

Arrival In Kenya

We were greeted in Kenya with rains. The Kentmere was waiting on us, Mr. Lawrence Njorogi was waiting on us. Great to see him. Through the night, we could hear the rain on the roof, an occasional monkey, and birds.

Sunday morning began with the beauty of the Kentmere landscape. Bonnie, Septima, and I enjoyed fresh pineapple and papaya, the traditional fare of Spanish omelets. Carol and Shirley (Bernard’s daughters) joined Bernard for breakfast with us. Shirley and Linda (a former Koinonia Bible Camp participant) are doing the crafts for the “Holiday Bible Camp” at Gatunguru. We saw Mary, Bernard’s wife, briefly as we dropped her off at the Koinonia on our way to Gatunguru.

The worship at Gatanguru was a great time of worship and experiencing Kikuyu worship style (the tribe of the area). This was a day of many firsts for Septima since this was her first trip to Kenya.

After worship, we had a planning meeting with our translators and co-workers for the Bible week. After tea and mdazi, we headed to the Blue Post Hotel to check in. The rains returned to greet our check in—a little wet but no problem.

We begin tomorrow morning with breakfast at 7:30 and our drive to Gatunguru. The big group gathering starts a little after the children have a “porridge snack” around nine. By 9:30, our four-way rotation will begin: Bible Story, Crafts, Recreation, and Academics.

Kenya Journey Begins

We are on our annual trip to Kenya for Children's Bible Camp. Once again, we have a "newbie" on the trip. Septima Hardy, from Atlanta, has joined the team. Circumstances have reduced the team to three. We have made it Amsterdam and are waiting for the flight to Nairobi.

Bernard Kabaru Mwangi is waiting on us in Nairobi. We will spend the night at the Kentmere and head for Gatanguru tomorrow. The church is located in the Central Highlands about two hours north of Nairobi, and about an hour from Thika. Our hotel during the week is the Blue Post, Thika. Each morning we will drive approximately one hour to Gatanguru where 150 children are expected to meet us. At least by the end of the week, we expect to have touched 150 children.

Our hope is to blog each day upon our return from Gatanguru. Thank you in advance for your prayers.

The Last Days: Celebrating all the way home

As you read this Bonnie is over the Atlantic and Anna, Katie, and Sarah are over Germany. All are on their way home. Pray that they will all arrive home tonight as scheduled.

Monday was a relaxing day. For the first time, no schedule just "free time". The group went outside the city of Reghin and had a picnic. Looks more like a feast. Ludai was the chef. Look at Attila's plate--mic, pork, wings--all meat with just a few fries. They had a great time. Ludai is practicing for the next Gypsy women's conference to be held at Apalina.

Monday night it was a visit to Istvan and Dora's house. This is also Isti and Zozo's home (they are Istvan and Dora's Sons.) At the back of the house, Lala and Esther have their rooms. They are also used for the Monday night worship in the Gornesti Gypsy community (although Hungarians attend also). The team could not resist the picture of Lala, Esther, and Miriam (Lala and Esther had the first "Christian" wedding here.).

Tuesday was off to Budapest from the Tirgu Mures International Airport. For the first time, NO Problems--those of you who have flown out know this is a first. The got to Budapest and Bonnie called for the hotel shuttle. She got a "fax"--phones ring differently in Hungary. So, Floyd called from the USA to Hungary to have the shuttle pick them up.

They headed downtown was in Buda or Pest. Anyway, the city was beautiful and they enjoyed a great meal on the Danube. Back to the hotel, the last headlice check, goodbyes, and off to bed.

Thank you for your prayers throughout the three weeks. They have been a great source of encouragement, strength, and support.

Sunday: Worship and Riding

Sunday is always a special time to be with Attila, Adel, and all the people of the churches and missions. Anna, Katie, Sarah, and Paul went to Gornesti. Bonnie and Attila were in Reghin. Bonnie and Attila went to Filpisu Mic to our three faithful believers there.

The evening service was the first one for Apalina. What a great worship service celebrating our awesome God. Anna, Katie, Paul, and Sarah sang at the service. You can follow this You Tube link for the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N05eIOFXHdI

A lot of interesting things happened after worship. Sarah demonstrated that she is a real Texas cowgirl. She jumped up on Ludai's horse (skirt and all) and rode. YeeeHaaa!

Then, the team went for a ride in a Gypsy wagon -- not "the" Gypsy Wagon -- but, a Gypsy wagon. Bonnie does not know who enjoyed it more her riding or Ludai getting to watch the Americans in a Gypsy wagon. So, much fun being with the believers in Apalina.

APALINA CHURCH IS READY FOR WORSHIP

Anna, Bonnie, Katie, Paul, and Sarah got a surprise when they got back to Reghin. After lunch, Attila took them and Zozo to see the Apalina church. Or, as Bonnie calls it, the cathedral.

One year ago, there was no church. We were just getting the property. There was no approval to build a church. God is an awesome God. He makes the impossible a reality.

While they were at the building, church members and people from the community kept coming by. Attila and the group just began to sing. Soon, there were over 40 people there. Attila took the opportunity to share the Gospel with them and thank God for His providing the cathedral.

Saturday: Camp Ends and Back to Reghin

The team worked hard during the night and in the morning to get everything ready to go. Before the bus arrived, everyone was together to pray thanking God for the camp and asking for a safe journey home to Glodeni, Gornesti, and Reghin.

The bus arrived and everyone was heading home at 11 a.m. The bus was smaller than before. This meant there was some doubling up, a loaded down Gypsy Wagon, and holding stuff or people in your lap.

Paul drove the Gypsy Wagon. Everyone was smiling and ready to hit the road. Wait, is that really a smile on Sarah's face or a nervous "help" smile. You have to love the close-ups that show reality.

The team was back in Reghin by mid-afternoon -- no problems coming home. The night ended with a GREAT PIZZA CELEBRATION. What is that look on Katie's face. Oh, that's a typical Katie look when she and Attila are harassing each other.

Friday: Amazing Day of Drama and Fire

Warning: There are a lot of pictures for today. Today was Jonah and the Whale. For the two-fold drama at night, the children are preparing for Jonah and the Whale and Daniel in the Lions Den!

Creative time today used the modeling clay again. You can see the creative work of the children on the table.

This is the full view of the boats as they are being prepared to take home on the bus.

The craft for today was caps. The children designed and painted their own caps. They really look great and the children were so excited.

Two great events ended the last day of camp. The first was the drama. Anna and Paul put together the dramas. The children loved getting painted up as lions for the Daniel story. The young ladies with the blue on their faces are the fish in the sea for the Jonah story. The closing scene was of Jonah praying. The dramas were a lot of fun, but they also had a real impact upon the children.

The last night of camp is bonfire night. Look at that bonfire. It started out as an average Hungarian bonfire, but soon, the children are on the hill to avoid the raging furnace. The fire could have been used to play another Daniel story. Just a little hot. As the night went on, Zozo led them in singing Gypsy songs. The day and last night of camp ended in celebration of all God had done this week.

Thursday: Another Day Another Adventure

This morning (Thursday) the plumbing system has literally exploded! The water is pouring through the ceilings of the first floor. Everybody was sent outside. What to do? Recreation was suddenly moved up in the schedule. Volleyball games were organized and the kids loved it. All the teaching was moved outside. The weather was foggy and threatening rain. The Bible Story today was the day the sun stood still.

The blog will not even go into the power out and the food in the refrigerator.

Creative interaction time featured using chenille sticks/ pipe cleaners to express yourself. Katie explains and the kids and staff let their creative juices flow. This really worked well outside. A budding ophthalmologist was discovered named Alex. First Alex made himself a pair of glasses--I guess so that he could see what he was doing. The next picture is of Alex making glasses for a girl named Kristina. He took such care to measure the bridge of her nose to have them fit and then also to fix them on her head. Who knew that a career would be born at children's camp.

Events have gone better than we dreamed it could under the circumstances. The pipecleaners were a life saver. The rain held off until lunch time so we were able to keep the children outside while the room dred out. The Gypsy (Roma) chaperones from Glodeni have had them in their rooms while the team ate and got the rooms ready for the rotations. The rain was ending as the afternoon rotation began. Crafts, singing, English, and Bible Study reveiw all running smoothly. Crafts today were mobiles made of stars and the moon. Katie was teaching the colors in English today. The children also had some seat work.

By 5 PM Romania time the Sun came out. A soccer match broke out and the weather was beautiful. Sarah said it was hard to believe that the plumbing fiasco was just that morning--seemed so long ago.

Can you guess what they had for supper? This is a Southern favorite! YELLOW GRITS! Romanians call it Mamaliga, the Hungarians call it puliszka, and Southerns call it grits. This is a favorite.

Wednesday: Boat races to Laundry to Bingo

This morning was the boat regatta and races. Everyone from the youngest to the oldest got into the water. The boats were made of wood. They were balloon powered and moved great through the water. The kids (and adults) were so excited by boat racing. While still at the river, some of them did their laundry for the rest of camp (see the picture right after the boat pictures).

Against protests, the truth comes out about one of the risks of this camp -- head lice. Momma monkey (played by Anna) inspects Bonnie's hair. Bonnie was declared lice free which is more than can be said about other team members.

Zozo and the guys are taking "supplies" back to the camp for recreation time later. The next picture is a view of the camp buildings coming up the road from the river.

The craft for today was a suncatcher picture frame. Craft time and the other times are divided by group so that everyone can get personalized attention and help.

The craft time was interrupted with a very expressive, "my God is so big!" You can see in craft time Part 2, that the guys are really serious about their painting.

The children really like Bingo. Like the other group, these children enjoy it but are very intense in their Bingo playing. The night ended abruptly with a strong storm. Lightening knocked out power in the area and four of the surrounding villages. Last word was no power and very dark.

Tuesday: Each Day Just Gets Better

The morning begins by going over the theme verse and then the Bible Story is taught. Following the Bible story is the creative time. This is a new addition to camp this year brought by Katie McClung.

Official name is Creative Response Time. The team is trying to help every child access the lessons from each story through art. First, the small group leaders lead their kids in a discussion about the story. Through the discussion, each child is led to think of a specific example from their lives that illustrates the truths about God that is being focused on for the day. Then, through various art mediums like crayons, paints, and clay, the children create a visual representation of the connection they have made with the story. Finally the children share their artwork and stories. In the evening, some children share with the whole group (the first posting last week had the older boys sharing from their creative time).

Creative time is followed by the morning swim (and recreation). You can see the pools and river diversion they've built. Look on top of the hill and you will see one of the older boys getting ready to jump. The second picture shows the splash as amazed spectators watch (and wonder is he crazy!) The judges on the rocks do not seem impressed by the jump.

The boats the children are building were painted with very bright colors. The unique designs and colors amazed the team. The children needed little encouragement in creating their sailing vessels. No word yet on the boat regatta.

Usually after craft time, they have their English lessons. Then, everyone gets in on the singing led by Anna and Zozo. The children did two rousing renditions of "Deep and Wide" during the closing worship.

Finally, finally, the first sheep of the camping season came for a visit. The sheep are usually among the guests at camp. This year, they were late for their visit. Tomorrow is the half-way point in the week. Thank you for your prayers for the team.

Monday: The Big Hike

Zoltan Dohi, the pastor and leader of the Glodeni church, is big on hiking. Today, like every year, he led them on a big hike to the top of the mountain pictured. The information is still sketchy on who actually made it to the top. Some turned back, some never attempted it, and some were not old enough to go all the way to the top. Bonnie got a picture of part of the team -- guarding the rear of the column against possible defections or attack. The picture of the house with the bridge in front shows (those little dots) are the campers crossing the bridge. The scenery was beautiful.

The Bible story went well today. The children really like the creative time. They loved making the paper flowers.

Sarah gets in on a little free play with the girls. Once again, they played "trash" in the neighbor's yard. Amazing how much fun you have dumping your junk on other people's stuff.

The waders, jumpers, and splashers are growing by the day. The children had a great time in the stream. They have created dams to divert water and create pools.

Florin Update

Florin is back in the hospital. His rubella is going away. However, the latest test for tuberculosis was positive. For almost two months he has been battling one illness after another. He is one tough guy.

About two months ago, he was admitted to the hospital and was diagnosed with infection (abscess pockets) in his kidneys. These were so severe that they threaten to destroy his kidneys. He still has the infection in his kidneys. This has not cleared up. While in the hospital the first time, he contracted rubella. The rubella showed up after he left the hospital. He received treatment at home and in emergency visits to the hospital for the rubella. Actually he was refused treatment for the rubella at one point.

Now he is back in the hospital because he was getting weaker and showing some signs of discoloration. They do a routine TB test upon entry to the hospital. This test showed positive. Previous tests on the other visits were negative. Now he is being treated only for TB and infection in the kidneys. The doctor is still hopeful that his kidneys can be saved. However, there is still a significant chance that at least one of them will be damaged. Then, the kidney will have to be removed.

Sunday: Day 7 and Day 1 All in one

Today was transition day. The children from Apalina left about 1 p.m. The children from Glodeni with Zoltan Dohi arrived on the same bus that was picking up the Apalina children.

Overnight, the team learned that the camp was to be "fumigated" after the children from Apalina left and before the children for Glodeni arrived. This was the health department's decision regarding the containment of rubella. The team had been told the process would require 5 hours. When they woke up this morning, it was misty and foggy. They were concerned about rain and what to do for 5 hours in the rain. This never became a real problem. There was some rain but no problem.

They had their last Bible story time about the creation of man and woman. Then, they made some really beautiful paper flowers. After that, the time came for the Apalina group to leave. So, Bonnie, Anna, Katie, Sarah, and Paul said good-bye to the Apalina group and waited along with the Glodeni group. They did get some sandwiches to eat.

The new group and team were allowed back into the building early. Nothing like the refreshing smell of fumigation to get you ready for a snack and activities. Actually, Bonnie said the windows had been opened so it wasn't too bad.

So far, it has been a great day. Paul already has his "groupies" who are hangin' with him. The first day was a long day of riding the bus and getting going at camp but ends with worship and then it's off to bed -- well, maybe.

Day 6: Last Full Day for Apalina Children

Early this morning, Attila, Adel, and Adel Nagy left the camp for Reghin. Attila had to meet the Romanian Chapel Project team who are putting the roof on the Apalina Mission Center. This significantly reduced the number of pictures as all available hands were occupied, especially early in the day.

Today's st orywas on Jonah and the whale. The creation topic was sea life and water.

The watercolor paints came out and the creativity began to flow. You get to see some of the pictures in their various stages of work.

This is just to share with you some of the unique opportunities that you could have as a staff member at Gypsy (Roma) Children's Camp. One of the neighbors did not like the noise the children were making and that they put their towels on his fence while swimming. The towels were removed, but the neighbor still was not happy. He complained rather loudly to Bonnie, but she did not know what he was saying. After a while, he finished and Bonnie understood he wanted the towels off his fence. The children did this. Bonnie shared with him that the stream was public and everybody in the village swam in it. A little later the police showed up. You should have seen the children scatter. No big deal just funny now how the children scattered. Bonnie and the staff did not know it was "run PO-O-O-O-LICE" time. All was resolved and no one went to jail, paid a fine or anything like that. Just a "misunderstanding" and no problems. The stream is and will be available for swimming for the children.

The cooks ran out of propane gas for the stove. You thought that only happened to men who grilled in America. Ludai put on another tank, but supper was late -- real late. When the dinner bell sounded, STAMPEDE! The picture is of Szidi moving aside as the herd comes for dinner.

The fun part of the evening was playing the traditional game of Gypsy Children's Camp: B-I-N-G-O. You can see that they are enjoying it. Look at how serious they are during the game. No, not sure what Bingo has to do with Jonah, the whale, or water.

Friday: Creating, Competing, and Singing

The theme throughout the week has been on God's creation and how God works in creation. The emphasis is upon when bad days come. Today's Bible story was on the day the sun stood still and the enemies of God had a bad day. Today was a great day for the children, even if the enemies of God had a bad day.

Today in the creative time the team was so excited to be using modeling clay. This clay was purchased in the U.S. and brought over in the suitcases. It came in bags and you add water. The team was sure that TSA would give them fits over it. This was one of the times that they were really looking forward to do with the children. Paul explained the "creative modeling clay" concept to the group. The kids really enjoyed expressing themselves with the clay.

Then came the great competition in racing and other events. Bonnie and Adel Nagy "raced" each other. The report was not on who won but that they both finished the race! Sarah Dyer really did race -- she can run! Bonnie was challenged by the oldest girl to an arm wrestling contest. She may not be a runner but she can arm "wrastle." The girl said Bonnie beat her fair and square. She really tried to beat Bonnie.

Then they played a most "Unchristian" game. You divide up into teams and have "trash" in your yard. The object of this game: Dump your trash in your neighbor's yard without taking any trash from them. HUMMM! Can't seem to find a Bible verse to go with that, but it sure is a great game to play -- flinging "trash" on your neighbor. (I am just kidding -- but this really is the game.)

In keeping with the theme, the kids made celestial mobiles...which the staff enjoyed tying together at midnight. :) They also were able to do some coloring and learn about the stars, moon, and the sun.

Probably should not share this on the blog but it shows how things work out. Paul had the great honor of talking with the boys about sex education. You should ask him when he gets back about this experience. Great story.

Anna led them all in a great time of singing. Morning and evening, it was Day 5.

Florin and Affect on Camp

Bonnie called this morning at 2 a.m. to report that Florin was in the hospital in Tirgu Mures. One of the women from Apalina had called and said that he was very sick.

Regarding the children's camp, they may have to take the children home tomorrow. This is so the camp can be cleaned to prevent the spread of the rubella before the next group of children arrive from Glodeni with Zoltan Dohi. Pray for wisdom to know how to handle the situation. Also, pray for the resources as this will add significantly to the cost of the camps. Thank you in advance for your prayers.

Despite this constant situation, the camp is going great. The children are the best ever.

Florin: An Unbelievable Story

No picture on this one. The story of a Romanian Gypsy boy named Florin is unbelievable. Yet, in one way, Florin’s situation exposes all of the issues that affect the Gypsies in Apalina.

Florin spent about a month in the Tirgu Mures hospital for kidney failure due to infections caused by poor living conditions. Florin and his father left the hospital before treatment was finished. They should not have done it, but they were tired of being in the hospital.

On Sunday of this week, Florin went to the local hospital in Reghin. He had a serious rash which was diagnoised as being a reaction to the failure of his kidneys and liver. He was sent home and given some medications. He was told that he did not have measles. Also, the doctor in Reghin told him that if he did not let the Tirgu Mures hospital treat him, then he would die from the illness. He had an appointment on Tuesday.

Florin did have rubella (measles). When Florin went Tuesday of this week to the Tirgu Mures hospital, he was retested by a doctor (kidney doctor) in Tirgu Mures who has proved to be very good to Florin. The doctor was livid because the Reghin hospital had missed the diagnosis of rubella and sent Florin back into Apalina. Florin was then sent to the infectious disease department. The irony is that the TM doctor was so upset with the Reghin hospital, but then the isolation unit in his own hospital (where Florin was sent for treatment) sent Florin back home because they refused to keep a "poor dirty Gypsy." When the doctor found this out, he called what is comparable to our county health department (health committee) very upset.

The health committee from TM took a team to Apalina and inoculated everybody in Apalina. This is a big issue because by law they should have already been inoculated. This may affect the second camp. They are trying now to determine if the camp must be disinfected and whether the children from the other village should come in contact with the children from Apalina.

Also, the children at the camp have played soccer with the neighborhood children. They have been swimming in the stream/creek.

Attila is currently working with the health people in the area of the camp. Now, Bonnie tells me that a team might be coming to inoculate all the children at camp. No one is sure where Florin is now, but the assumption is that he is still in Apalina.

BIG PRAYER CONCERN IS THAT SOME OF THE WOMEN WHO HAVE HELPED FLORIN AND IN THE APALINA CHURCH ARE PREGNANT—first trimester. Please pray for the protection of their unborn child. They are very upset by this.

Just got a message from Bonnie as I was blogging this. She wrote: "Word from Apalina is 'there is much sickness here.'"

This also has an impact upon the Chapel Project team coming to do the
roof at the church building at Apalina. If rubella is rampant, we don't know if they will be able to do the work.

You can see how prejudice against the Gypsy has led to a serious issue in the community and affected so many lives. We are still not sure where Florin is. I assume that he is at his home.

I will try to keep you updated as I know something. We are asking your prayers for Attila, Adel, and Paul as they seek to lead in this. Pray, too, for Bonnie, Katie, Anna, and Sarah as they serve the children and try to do all they can for Florin (even though they are at camp and he is in Apalina). Pray for the healing of the Apalina Gypsy Village. Pray for Attila to have wisdom in handling this now very complex situation while taking care of himself. In the afternoon, there is always time to swim or at least wade in the stream. In the third picture, you can see the dam they built in the stream.

The craft time was making picture frames for their pictures printed yesterday in Sibiu.

Day 4: Morning and Lunch

This year Katie McClung introduced a creative time for the children to depict the Bible Story, its teaching, and what they see as most important in the story. This has gone very good--the children have really gotten into it.

Then it was off to fill up water balloons for some fun in the sun. Right now there is a big heat wave in Romania. Even in the mountains, the heat and humidity is high.
The water ballons were guarded by Ludai as the children played different games. Two of the most popular were catching the balloons with a sheet and throwing them with the sheet.

Morning and Evening the Second Day is Good

This morning, Ludai, one of the first believers in Apalina lead in the morning prayer. He has a great heart for the Lord. He is serving as a chaperone for the children's camp this year.

The Evening of the First Day of Camp

After supper, everyone gathered for big group time to sing led by Zozo and to share what was learned during the day.

Katie wrapped up the day focusing on the Bible story and teaching on light and darkness. The pictures are of the older guys sharing how they can live in the light of Jesus when He changes a person. They are depicting what that looks like and what it means in their lives. Please be praying for these older guys. Bonnie, Katie, Anna, and Paul have been with some of them for every children's camp. Bonnie shares that at least four of the them are at a crucial time of decision regarding following Jesus.

During the big group time every evening Attila leads a decision time. In their tradition this is a time of praying and if one chooses to pray out loud. Tonight you will notice that some of the older guys came to the front and knelt down to pray. Many times these are prayers of confession and repentance. Unlike what we experience in America, they are very open and public in their confession and desire to follow Christ. One of the younger guys (one Bonnie prays for quite often)shares with the group in prayer. Anna and Zozo lead singing at the end of the time. Katie and Sarah continue in prayer for the children and the week of camp.

The Beginning of a Great First Full Day of Camp

The first full day of camp has begun! The Bible story today is Saul's (Paul's) conversion. The emphasis is on light and darkness. After the Bible Story the children were divided into groups for a creative learning time that you see in the first pictures.

There was some free time in which "real" football, soccer, skills were displayed and enjoyed.

Lunch is a great time at camp and the children can really eat. No picky eaters here.

The craft for today was designing their own caps for camp. They really enjoyed this. Looks like Adel is getting into the action on the caps. I love the intensity on his face as he starts to work on his cap.

Katie is teaching the alphabet with Zozo's help. They love learning English and it even helps them with their Hungarian.

Paul and Anna are leading the children in singing the theme song: "This is the day..."

Time to go. They are heading for the mountain stream to swim. They dam up the stream and create their own swimming pool. This is camp!

First Day: Going to Camp

The bus arrived early this morning at Apalina and the week of children's camp began with the long ride to the camp about 25 minutes from Sibiu (over 4 hours from Apalina). Anna, Bonnie, Katie, Dan, Piroska, and Ludai were on the bus. Adel and Attila were driving a VW wagon, and Paul was driving the Gypsy Wagon with Adel Nagy, Reghin church member, as a thrill-seeking passenger. I quote, "The children were sick as dogs" from the bus ride. Katie manned the barf bags. The rest of the team on the bus was struggling not to join the children rather than Katie. Every time the children have "issues" on the bus because the only time they get to ride a big bus for so long is going to camp. The children were good and listened when corrected. Bonnie says they had a great bus driver.

The big shopping trip took place in the afternoon for "food" and surprises -- like ice cream, etc. The first day started great with singing and introducing the theme of the week: "This is the day the Lord has made let us rejoice and be glad in it." Psalm 118:24.

Last word was at 11:08 p.m. (Romania time). The team was headed to bed getting ready for the first full day of camp.

Sunday

The "Team" began their Sunday worship at the Gornesti Church. Katie, Anna, Sarah, and Paul sang "Be Thou My Vision" (see www.valleysfillfirst.blogspot.com or Teleios Ministry on Facebook) Katie, Anna, and Sarah brought greetings and Sarah was introduced to the church (as a first timer). This morning was the Lord's Supper celebration. Anna played the organ this morning (she always does when she comes).

The pictures are from Bonnie's Blackberry--to those of you who know Bonnie--she is always claiming that she is technology jinxed--Yes, they are from her blackberry. Here is the big part--she sent them by Blackberry Messenger! So maybe this year there will be some pictures during the Gypsy/Roma Childrens' Camp week.

After Gornesti, they went to Filpisu Mic for worship, then to Reghin, and then to Apalina. The evening ended with Florin going to the local hospital accompanied by his American mom (Bonnie) because he had what they thought was the measles. Instead, the doctor said it was a rash due to kidney and liver complications. Florin is taking his medicine. He returns to the main hospital in Tirgu Mures on Tuesday and promises to stay this time. Attila and Adel are doing all they can to make sure Florin is receiving the best care--he will allow. Florin's father came to the Apalina worship service tonight.

Tomorrow at 8 AM (1AM EST)the bus is scheduled to leave for camp. Pray for all the team as they travel the four hours or so to camp. There will be 50 children attending the camp. Exciting this year is that some of the Apalina parents who are believers are going also.

The Engagement and Let the Games Begin

Today,Saturday, was a great day. Attila's brother, Istvan, came to Peris for his engagement celebration with Emi (she is a member of the Peris church). Many of you remember praying for Istvan just over a month ago. His parents found him unconscious in his room at their home. He did not breath on his own until two hours later. A friend (who is a nurse) did CPR for a long time. The doctor told the family that he was not going to live--too long not breathing. But they would not give up. Eventually, he began breathing on his own.

Today, he was celebrating his engagement to Emi. Thank you for your prayers. They still don't know what caused his problem. Bonnie, Anna, Katie, Sarah, and Paul were all at the celebration most of the day.

Florin caused concern again. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital. They gave him a shot and he came home with a very high fever. The team visited him. Attila purchased some medicine for him. Please keep praying for him. They also visited the construction sight of the Apalina Mission Center.

Tonight, their was a great game tournament of Legato: Anna, Katie, Sarah, Paul, Dan, Tihamer, Gabriel, Attila, Adel, Andrew, Gyuri, Elisabeth, and more. The pictures are the only ones sent so far. As you can see, not only do they work hard but the play hard. Tomorrow is long day of worship. The team will worship with at least four of the church. Please pray for the worship.

The Fearsome Foursome Made It

Anna, Bonnie, Katie, and Sarah made it Reghin. Just spoke with them by SKYPE as Adel was loading up the table for dinner. A lot of laughing and loud talking going on. Tihamer had traveled four hours to meet the team--he is newly married for two weeks. Already, Katie and Attila were harassing each other. I could hear Attila telling her, "I am older and wiser." Adel is so excited to have the four with her. She has been the only woman with Attila, Paul (serving during summer from North Charleston), and Dan (from England).

Sarah wins the prize for the longest journey. She had about seven hours layover in JFK. She loved hearing so many languages and people watching. Of course, this was interrupted by an occasional nap. Katie had the shortest with a taxi ride to JFK from Manhattan. They all met in JFK for a good flight.

Bonnie's usual airplane adventure occurred. She and a man had the same seat assignment. Bonnie was bumped up to the new economy comfort since she is a GOLD MEDALLION with Delta. Her Gold Medallion status got her more leg room, etc. PLUS a baby hanging over the seat in front of her crying in her face most of the trip. PLUS, the bathroom was next to her "comfort" seat. This gave a new meaning to being bumped up. Now, a hundred bathroom seeking passengers bump her during the nine hour flight.

I don't have the time or energy to report on the checking in at Budapest. Other than to say, that God has blessed Bonnie with the greatest friend in Elizabeth Vekas.

LESSON ONE IN INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL: NEVER NEVER let a Delta check-in agent tell you that you cannot check your luggage to its final destination. Even with two tickets on different airlines, most airlines have luggage agreements. Getting a boarding pass is not the same. You may not be able to get a boarding pass but you can (I REPEAT CAN) check your luggage to the final destination--all you need is a copy of all your tickets available. Only Bonnie's Delta reps checked through her luggage all the way. The other Delta agents for Anna, Sarah, and Katie did not and even said they couldn't. Not being funny but serious, the GSP Delta agents are some of the best anywhere in the world--they have repeatedly helped us. But, apparently the same cannot be said for Nashville, JFK, or San Antonio.

Paul was not to be seen in the SKYPE video. He had English classes in Gornesti. No supper just work, work, work. Paul is an elementary teacher from North Charleston, speaks Hungarian, and doing a great job taking the pressure off Attila. Attila reports that the Apalina Mission Center is almost finished.

Tanzania Mbeya Women's Conference begins

First, we apologize for no pictures, but we still aren't able to get them for posting. Bonnie is texting information for the blog.

Today was the first official day of the conference and there are 38 women enrolled. Bonnie and Tina report that this conference has a different atmosphere than the Iringa conference. However, this is not negative - things are going great! This is just an observation as Neema, Bonnie, and Tina teach, dialogue, and pray with the women.

Pray for the women as they open up to God's Word and His Spirit as it teaches and guides them. Pray for Bonnie and Tina as they teach and interact with the women.
Pray for, Maka (Mark) Mwaisumbe, Neema and Mpeli's teen-age son. He is doing all the translation. Bonnie asks especially that you pray for him. He translated for Bonnie and Tina today for more than six hours at last text. Pray for his strength and focus as he translates.

The Mbeya conference will continue with a full day tomorrow and a half day on Wednesday. The gang will head back to Iringa on Wednesday afternoon. If all goes well, they will have a half-day safari on Thursday. Then they travel to Dar Es Salaam to fly home late Friday night. Your partnership in prayer is deeply appreciated.

Tanzanian Women's Conference Update Iringa

The Iringa, Tanzania, Women's Leadership/Pastor's Wives Conference exceeded expectations. Twenty-six women who attended the Iringa conference came from diverse backgrounds: Roman Catholic, Baptists, Pentecostals, Lutheran women. The women represented small villages, cities, and even the capital of Dar Es Salaam. They came from mud huts to government offices. As the conference was ending the women came together in an exciting and surprising way. The women decided to meet monthly for prayer for their churches, communities, and each other. This was not planned but just happened as the women responded to the teaching and dialogue with Bonnie and Tina. They were both excited about the impact of the conference for the women. Already, a conference is planned for next year.

Bonnie and Tina had little time to rest. The Iringa conference began on Wednesday night and ended on Saturday at lunch. Bonnie and Tina's luggage had arrived by Friday. The spent Saturday getting ready for their trip to Mbeya for the second women's conference.

The developments and responses of the Iringa conference excited Bonnie, Tina, and Neema at the possibilities for the Mbeya women's conference.

They left Sunday morning with Neema driving to Mbeya for the first time. They headed for their next great adventure. When they arrived in Mbeya for the conference on Sunday afternoon. They discovered the women were already arriving at the conference location. A evening worship service was organized because 32 women had arrived by the evening. Even before the conference began the Spirit of the Lord was moving among the women. Thank you for your partnership in prayer for these conferences.

Saturday: Floyd Home

I arrived home last night. Great to be home. A lot of opportunities for mission, partnerships, and invovlement for partners in life-changing work.

Talked with Bonnie this morning in Tanzania. The first women's conference in Iringa is over. She promises that if the electricity holds out in the area then she'll send a report. I think she wants to share some really exciting developments as a result of the conference, so I am waiting on her to share in this blog.

She and Tina are doing great. They leave tomorrow for Mbeya and the second women's leadership conference. Thank you in advance for your prayers.

Thursday: Tanzania Women's Conference Update

Bonnie and Tina spent the night in Dar Es Salaam, TZ, with Mpeli and Neema Mwaisumbe. On Wednesday morning, they drove over 10 hours to Iringa from Dar. They arrived late afternoon and discovered an evening worship service for the conference. Bonnie reports that the worship was awesome. The Daily Bread Life Children's Home Choir sang in the opening evening worship service. Many people were invited for the worship in addition to the women who are participating.

They still do not have their luggage. However, they have been promised that it will arrive this afternoon or evening by bus.

This morning, the conference began early and, at last report, was going well. Due to some technical difficulties, there are no pictures to post at this time. Thank you for the encouragement that you have given to Bonnie and Tina in their incredible journey. Little of the journey has been captured in the blog, but needless to say even Bonnie, a veteran traveler, has experienced a few firsts and some interesting delays.

Bonnie Parker and Tina Thomas arrived on schedule in Targu Mures, Romania, airport. Attila and I picked them up. We are all together in Reghin with Adel and Attila.

Once again, Bonnie's luggage did not arrive with her. She and Tina have luggage on vacation in Paris. Your prayers for the luggage to arrive tomorrow is needed. If it doesn't arrive tomorrow, it will be at least Sunday. They leave on Monday afternoon for Tanzania. We would like for them to have clothes and things that they have for Tanzania.

Tomorrow, they will visit some women in Reghin. Attila and I will join some of the men from the Gornesti and Peris church to butcher a goat. The men were to decide what the women would have for their lunch at the Women's Conference on Saturday. We decided to make authentic Hungarian Goulash. The goat will provide the meat - we have not seen the goat. It was donated. The conference this year is 100 women - double last year's number. That is a lot of Goulash! I am praying for a big goat.

We have to peel potatoes, cut tomatoes, onions, dice the meat, cut the peppers, slice the bacon and fatback. This is heart healthy goulash! Thank goodness we get to purchase the fresh baked bread.

Monday: Couples Night

Tonight was a very special night for Otto and Elisabeth. Over the past years they have been building relationships with couples in the Sacele and Brasov area. Tonight they invited them to a local restaurant to all be together for the first time. Thirty-four people came to the dinner. Their dream is to develop a young couples group that will encourage and support one another for stronger families. Their hope is that they will all grow in Jesus Christ, follow Him, and lead their families in Him.

They worked hard getting decorations, making plans, calling, preparing handouts, and, above all, praying. Otto had each couple introduce themselves. The husband introduced the wife with only good things to say about her. The wife introduced the husband the same way. This really started the evening on a positive and enjoyable note. One couple had a positive impact upon the group in a really strange way. The husband stood up and said, “We just got a divorce.” At first it was very quiet then you could see the impact of this upon the couples. Even, that couple was seemed to enjoy themselves after the “introductions” were over.

I had the opportunity to share about practical issues in the life of a young couple. We had a great time together with a lot of laughing and talking. I wish that you could have seen Elisabeth’s face as the evening came to a close. She was so happy. The fulfillment of a dream had begun. It was everything she dreamed and more.

The great part was how everyone stayed afterwards and visited. Some did not know each other and new friends were made. The couples night was a great evening. Already they plan to get together in April and May.

Bonnie, they are really looking forward to meeting you after all the great things I said about you and our marriage. We, as a couple, are "kinda" committed to come back and talk about marriage and family.

Otto and Elizabeth Kis: The Sacele Mission

Sunday morning at 2:30 a.m., I arrived in Sacele from Reghin with Otto, Elisabeth, Benjamin, and Rhode Kis. They came by and picked me up on their way back from their “birth village.” Elizabeth and Adel Toth are sisters. Attila, Adel, Otto and Elisabeth all grew up in the same village, Sarmasag.

On Sunday morning, I preached in the Brasov Hungarian Baptist Church. Many of you remember this church because Gyula and Marta Borzasi served her. Also, Joseph and Adina Mike served at the Brasov church. Otto had served as iterim pastor while the church looked for a pastor after Gyula and Joseph were called to other work.

Now, Zolt and Evodia Deak serve the Brasov church. I had the privilege to teach Zolt in the seminary and pray with him about the move to Brasov. This was the first time that I had met Evodia, but I felt like I knew her. Finally, I asked her, “Do you have relatives in Toronto?” The ACTS Fellowship team and Business Leaders Group that served in Toronto in 2010 had stayed with her sister, Maria and her family. I then remembered that Maria and her family had shared that they were going to Romania for her sister’s wedding. Being with Zolt and Evodia was a real blessing.

On Sunday night, the Sacele mission worshipped. The group has really grown since last year. Tonight, there were five new people. Otto and Elizabeth are doing a great work in the area. Tamas and Sylvia Rab are great partners with them in the mission. Every week they set up and take down the worship area. A local Romanian foundation lets them use their building for worship.

Big news is today we are going to look at a piece of property. Your prayers are asked as we seek God’s leadership on its purchase and possible development. More details will follow later.

Tonight, we are hosting a “Young Couples” dinner at a local restaurant. Otto and Elizabeth have started an outreach to young couples in the area and have involved members of the Brasov church and Sacele mission in the outreach. The nature of the work in Sacele is highly relational, and the dinner tonight is the result of a lot of time invested in building relationships with the couples.

The Peris Evangelistic Meetings

Special evangelistic meetings were held in the Peris Cultural Hall on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday Night. God is amazing at how He works. There was a young woman from the Netherlands who was working in the area on educational issues — also, English language. So, she had invited many to come and hear “real English” by an American. I did correct her saying that I spoke “American” and “Southern American” at that. God used her encouragement of the people in the village.

Every night there were groups of young people who sang and shared their testimonies as a part of the meetings. The groups came from Gornesti and Targu Mures. They did a great job. Attila and I had the opportunity to share with one Gypsy lady who committed her life to Christ. Very important was getting to meet and develop relationships with the people in the village. The Peris mission has property and has put the foundation for a building on it. They are waiting to develop the building. Currently, they meet in the house of one of the members of the group.

Attila and the Peris group were excited by the people who came to the meetings. They were eager to follow up with those who wanted to know more about the mission and who wanted to come worship with the mission group. Thank you for your prayers during this time.

Tuesday: Pal and Anna Borzasi

I traveled in the Gypsy Wagon (2003 Dacia station wagon) to Luna de Sus just outside of Cluj on Tuesday to visit Pal and Anna Borzasi. I realized after I left that I did not have a picture of Anna and the children or the church in Luna de Sus to share with you.

We had a good time sharing together what God was doing in our lives. Pal took me to Mera church which has to be one of the oldest Baptist church buildings in Transylvania. It is over 100 years old. My observation was that little had been done to the church to change it over the years. Great to hear how God is working in the village and the church. Just a note, should you ever go through Mera, they have the “Buffalo Museum” there. I don’t know why but that fascinated me.

When I left Pal and Anna's home, I stopped at a gas station to fill up the Gypsy Wagon. A young man came over and filled the car for me. He saw the "Gypsy" painted on the side of the car and asked about working with Gypsies. He was from Baia Mare where our friend Kovacs Jozsef is pastor. We had a great time talking. He was in Cluj going to the university. I tried to tip him for pumping the gas and cleaning the windows. He said to me, "Keep it and use for the Gyspy work."

Pal and Anna are seeking partners in developing Gypsy children’s camp in the area. Pray for them as they begin this work.

A Free Day and Fish

On Monday, we had a “free” day. Well, we had to be back for an evening meeting with the baptized believers and those who are preparing for baptism with the Apalina mission. We decided to go to the mountains for a mountain trout lunch.

The scenery along the way was beautiful - the sheep grazing in the field and the mountains. Adel and Attila had celebrated their anniversary with dinner at this “mountain trout” resort. We enjoyed a delicious meal of mountain trout. All but one of the ponds and lakes at the fishing place were frozen over. During the spring, summer, and fall, you can come here and fish for mountain trout. We had a great time there. Amazing to me was that all of the cars but ours, I think, were from Hungary.

On the way back, Adel saw some trees that had flowers she really likes. We stopped and got some to make arrangements for the house and churches. I cannot remember the name of the trees — we have them in the U.S. and I have seen the branches with the opening buds in arrangements.

At night, we met with the Apalina believers to talk about how to respect each other and how to love our neighbors in specific ways. This was a great time of teaching and discussion.

Sunday: Worship Gornesti, Filpisu Mic, Reghin, and Apalina

Sundays with Adel and Attila is an adventure in moving. We left for Gornesti at 9:30 a.m. Gornesti is a strong, new church with great excitement and fellowship of both Hungarians and Gypsies worshipping and serving together. There is so much enthusiasm when they come together. We celebrated the Lord’s Supper together in Gornesti in the morning. Zozo led the morning prayer time. I personally love this time when all the church is together praying. Zozo shared from the Bible and then there were times of prayer and singing. After the worship service, we had lunch with Miklos and Theresa in Gornesti. They are a great couple and leaders in the Gornesti mission work.

We then picked up Tihamer and went to Filpisu Mic for a 2:30 p.m. meeting. Filpisu Mic is a farming village that “you have to want to go to.” The village is far off the main road and to me, seems isolated. The Filpisu Mic church was the first in the area and the mother church of all the Baptist churches in the area. Today, there are three members left. They meet in a farm house, and I am always amazed at how much they know about what is happening in the world and in the mission. They are always praying for the needs of the mission and the world. These three always bless my life when I worship with them.

After worship in Filpisu Mic, we left for the Reghin church for worship at 4 p.m. Reghin is the “center” of the mission work in the area. This is the home church for Attila and Adel’s work. The church is small and stays about the same. There is a growing group of young people in the Reghin church. Pray for Attila, Adel, and the Reghin church because it seems some of them are moving to other areas in search of work. Attila is praying about how to have a greater impact in Reghin. As the older members are not able to be involved in the mission and the younger ones move, Attila is always challenged to strengthen the mission in Reghin. As you saw from the previous blog, this summer, after saving for many years, members were able to renovate the church.

Our final visit was to the Apalina mission between 5:30 and 6 p.m. No need to describe Apalina because you saw it in the previous blog. The Apalina mission is the most challenging. When we arrive, we talk and begin to sing. People start coming in and by 6 p.m. the building is packed with people. They love to sing and they are so attentive to the message. There is a great hunger in Apalina. There are so many problems in the community and life is a struggle especially for the believers in the community. After the service, like each of the other services today, there was a lot of praying with the people about specific needs.

I am struck by the uniqueness of each church or mission. The people are different and the churches are different. Each has its unique challenges and blessings. Nowhere do I experience more diversity in worship and “church personality” as here.

We arrived home about 8 p.m. The house was of full of young people from Reghin. No time to unwind, it was time to play some games together. About 10:30 p.m., the games broke up and a great day of worshipping the Lord and celebrating His life in us as the Body of Christ ended. I have to tell you that I was tired. I thank God for the blessing and opportunity to worship in each of the services.

Saturday: The Vision is Reality

Words do not seem adequate to express what today means to me. In October, Bernard Kabaru Mwangi from Kenya, Attila Toth from Romania, and I met in the Teleios office in Greenville, SC, to develop a plan for teaching and developing Gypsy leaders in the mission areas of Gornesti, Apalina, Goldin, and others. This past November the training began on Saturdays. Today was the last teaching session until next fall. Gypsy leaders came from all over the area, some riding the bus from as far away as 200 kilometers. There were about 45 there for training. Our subject was the Holy Spirit and Holy Spirit in the life of the believer.

There were Baptists and Pentecostals coming together in training. I enjoyed so much teaching, the dialogue, the questions, the prayers, the singing, and the fellowship. I regret that Kabaru could not be with us. This vision is a reality.

Teleios Ministry has general partners who provide support for partnership development. The gifts are not "attached" to a specific partnership. These gifts provide for the fulfillment of these types of visions. A special word of thanks to those who partnered to make this vision a reality.

We did enjoy the cabbage rolls prepared by Adel, Piroska, and Moni (along with some really good fresh bread).

Attila and Adel: For the Love of the Gypsy

This is Apalina, a large Gypsy community that sits on the edge of Reghin. Attila and Adel Toth have a calling to serve this community in Jesus Christ. Our hope is that this summer, the Apalina church building will be completed as a transformational center for the community (see below). Over the past week of staying with Attila and Adel, their passion and heart for the people of Apalina is so evident. I cannot even list the number of ways in which they serve. In the past few days, Attila has counseled with more than one family where the father is going to prison; helped others get a national identity card (before this they were “unknown” to the government and technically did not exist); arranged medical care; delivered clothes and food; helped them find jobs; and all this while serving in regular pastoral responsibilities. There is not a day that they are not serving in Apalina.

Today, we visited with Samuel and his family of 12 children. He lives on the top of the hill that overlooks the church property. You can see the foundation of the church from his house. Samuel recently made the decision to follow Jesus Christ. His home is on the edge of a garbage site. His children and wife go through the garbage to find items that they can sell. Visiting with Samuel and his family was a powerful reminder of why Attila and Adel are serving in Apalina. The Gypsies of Apalina trust Attila and Adel and he is constantly greeting, talking, and waving as we walk the street.

I hope that you can see the “fence” around Samuel’s house. He came Sunday night so upset because he had to spend the day putting his fence back up. Seems some other Gypsies stole his “fence.” He had gotten it back and was putting it back up to protect his place. The challenges of life in Apalina are difficult.

The older man and girl are grandfather and granddaughter. Her father(a Gypsy) went to work in Spain to try and make some money for the family. While he is away, his wife left him and is "married" to another man. She left the children with his father. Now, the children live with their grandfather and grandmother. The real tragedy is that the Gypsy man in Spain has been tricked. He has no money to come home. All of his money is being used to pay for his expenses. Basically, he is slave of a deceitful "boss." The "boss" took advantage of his desire to provide for his family and now he appears to be trapped in Spain. This is not an isolated situation. Other Gypsies are in a similar situation. Since they are "only Gypsies" there are few who care. Please pray for the man, his family, and for those who are seeking for find a way for him to come home.

The pictures of the concrete piles and building are to show where many of the Gypsies work. They are getting the scrap metal from abandoned factories to sell. This is hard and dangerous work, but it is legal. Just a few years ago this was a huge steel producing factory. Now, this is all that is left. Today, the Gypsies were digging deep in the ground to get cables and pipes out of the ground to sell. They break the concrete pillars and floors with sledge hammers to get the rebar (steel rods) to sell. Attila "loaned" a group of Gypsy men enough to buy bread since they had not had any breakfast or lunch. They will pay him back when they sell the scrap metal.

Adel, Piroska, and Moni spent the day making cabbage rolls for the Saturday training. Piroska and Moni are members of the Apalina church. They had a great time together (and the cabbage rolls were really delicious as you'll see on the Saturday blog!)

This is very hard work for Attila and Adel. They are so grateful for your encouragement, prayers, and partnership.

Teleios partners are making a tremendous difference in Apalina through your prayers, support, and mission teams. The Apalina building also requires a fence. An entrance to the property over a ditch was constructed for delivering materials for the foundation. Now, some of the people are using the entrance to bring trash onto the property for dumping. A fence was in plans eventually, but, the fence seems to be needed sooner rather than later. Join us in prayer as construction on the building moves forward. More partners are needed to bring this vision to a reality.

Zoltan Dohi: The Vision of Glodin

Zoltan (Zolli) and Abigail Dohi are church planters working with Attila Toth in Glodin, Romania. The area is better known as Serbia. Serbia is a very large Gypsy community in the village of Glodin. Also, Zozo Kalanyos, in Gornesti, works with Zolli in the mission work there. Zozo works primarily with the children and worship.

The church building was built this summer from used bricks and materials. Zolli, Attila, Gypsies from Apalina, and local Gypsies built the building. It is still unfinished but it was very useful this winter. In Peris, (another mission point) property was purchased that had an old house on it. The bricks and materials were brought from Peris to Goldin. They have it wired for electricity (a light bulb in the center of the sanctuary).

Zolli has a vision of a playground on the empty land behind the church building. This summer he hopes to clear the property of trash, plant some trees, and make a playground for the children. The area can be used along with the church property for children’s ministry. Also, the area will serve a place to connect with the Gypsy families. The vision for the mission in Goldin is that in five years there will be a strong church that serves as a community center for Serbia. Zolli and Abigail will continue to plant churches as the Lord opens and calls them to new villages.

The Goldin mission now has two baptized believers - one Gypsy and one Hungarian. There will also be a baptism this summer. The mission work is growing and the impact of the mission is evident in the area.

I first met Zolli teaching at the Hungarian Baptist Seminary of Romania. Bonnie and I met Abigail and her family at the Satu Mare Baptist Church where Zoltan Vekas served. I had the privilege of participating in their wedding. Over the years, we have stayed in touch and partnered with them as the opportunities came. A few years ago, Zolli and Abigail moved to the area to work with Attila in church planting in the villages near Gornesti. The Lord has blessed the work with the beginning of the Goldin mission.

Zolli and Abigail live at the edge of a neighboring village on a small farm. Zolli grew up on the farm and you see his father’s car in the picture. They were trimming the fruit trees and cleaning up part of the small farm. Zolli has a degree in forestry and divinity (Seminary degree in pastoral ministry). Zolli doesn’t have a car but rides a horse (given to him by Andras, one of the believers in Goldin) to mission points. He also uses a bicycle. Abigail grew up in the city but has adjusted very well to village/farm life. They also received a milk goat and now have two-week-old baby goats. Zolli also raises rabbits for income. They have four children. Pictured here are the two oldest boys, Gershom and Zolan.

Monday and Tuesday: At home with Adel and Attila

When I arrived on Monday, we headed straight for Istvan and Dora's house to have a feast that they always prepare when we come. This was "Nyama Choma II," Gypsy style. The feast was followed by a worship service in the back of their house where Lala and Ester live (Istvan and Dora's son and his family). The two small rooms were packed with people. I love Monday nights here. Great to see my friends and partners in mission again.

On Tuesday, we went to see the renovations of the Reghin church. The church had been saving for years to renovate the church. A new roof, fence, and fixing up the inside of the church. Attila's father did the iron work for the new fence. They did a great job. Best of all volunteers from Gornesti, Apalina, and other churches came together to help with the labor. At night we worshipped with the Gornesti church.

Sunday: Nyama Choma Celebration

After Sunday worship we went for “Nyama Choma” or grilled meat to celebrate with the young women that Bernard and Mary have “adopted” into their family. Judy and Eunice are Bernard’s nieces who are now his due to the death of his brother and sister-in-law. Margaret is an “adopted” daughter." Cynthia is an “adopted daughter.” Margaret and Cynthia both are entering college after passing the National Exam. So, we were celebrating. Also, we wanted to have time with Titus’ family.

The afternoon was interesting because Bernard asked the young women, “Should I expect a dowry from your fiancé when you get married?” All of them said yes. This was very interesting to me because they are all very independent young women. Then Bernard asked, “How much should they appreciate me, really you? (or how much of a dowry should I ask or should they give for you?” This made for an interesting but entertaining afternoon.

Back to the Nyama Choma, we had roasted chicken and goat ribs with sides of French fries, roasted potatoes, and greens. This was really good. We had a great time. I am glad I was taking pictures so you cannot see the pile of ribs in front of my plate.

As soon as we arrived home, I went over all my things — I did not leave anything in Kenya! We headed for the airport. Time in Kenya was too short.

Had a nice six-hour sleep on the plane from Nairobi to Amsterdam. Then, it was on to Budapest and Targu Mures to meet Attila and Adel.

Sunday: Celebration Day

My last day in Kenya was a great one beginning with worship at Koinonia. The morning schedule there has changed some. Now, with the new building, they have a time of Bible study and prayer by groups: men, women, youth, children, etc. (Before they had a large group Bible study in the sanctuary).

The praise team led us in worship that celebrated our life in Jesus Christ. A new addition to the praise team was Mumford (he also works with orphans and vulnerable children ministry of Koinonia). Margaret was the worship leader in the morning. Pastor Samuel led the prayer and offering times. The children leave the worship service just before the message and have their own children’s message. When they leave, it is a crowd. You don’t realize how many youth and adults are in worship until the children leave. What is amazing is that it seems like there are many more in worship rather than less. The worship is enthusiastic, prayerful, humble, and full of praise. During the service Bernard recognized the young people who had taken the National Secondary School Exam. All those had passed. The students have to make a “C” in order to go on to college.

Simon, Samuel, and James are three young men that ACTS Fellowship in Greenville has supported for almost five years. Simon is in the seventh grade and will be going to boarding school next year. Currently he is ranked 15th in his school. Simon has come a long way in the past years. Samuel was one of the first children that ACTS met on the first December VBS trip. This year, he finishes the eighth grade and takes the National Exam. He plans to become a mechanic and will start vocational school in January 2012. James is almost finished with his apprenticeship as a carpenter. He hopes to have another year of experience before beginning his own business. Seeing the transformation in their lives because of Jesus Christ and the changes that have come is truly a blessing. They now speak English and are doing great. They serve in many areas in the church.

Friday and Saturday: Challenges and Joys of Partnership

When I arrived at the airport, no problem with visa or luggage. When I walked through the sliding doors leaving customs to meet Bernard, there was no Bernard. I tried to text him a couple of times but no response. Even tried one call with no response. I thought about how years earlier this would have been a very challenging time. I went over to a cafe in the airport, ordered a cup of chai no sugar, and sat down to wait. Finally got Bernard, he was stuck in early morning traffic. Gave me a couple of hours to work on partnership and teaching material.

The challenge of partnership was reflected in trying to get Bernard a Romanian visa to travel with me on Sunday night. The Hungarians with Adrian Giorgiov and Istvan Borzasi had provided what the Romanian embassy requested. Then, on the day of the interview they changed their mind on the documents. So, again, Adrian and Istvan did the best they could. The Romanian embassy did not respond to Bernard's calls or e-mails on Friday. So we had to cancel his travel with me on Sunday to Romania. The challenges of partnership soon give way to the joys of partnership. Bernard and I were able to just sit down and talk about present partnerships and future plans.

Also, he shared how the Teleios model of partnership had really been a blessing for Koinonia Church and other related partnerships. We went shopping at the market seeing old friends there as we bargained for gifts and picked up some coffee.

I could not believe the changes coming to Ruaka (just outside Nairobi). An expressway that makes a bypass from the airport to beyond Ruaka around Nairobi is well underway. It comes within just a few hundred meters of Koinonia. The first pictures show the continuing development and as well as the contrast of buildings. The church is looking good and everything is now in the one building. Hard to believe all the changes in five years - the migration of the church to four different locations with temporary structures and now to have a more permanent structure.

On Saturday we spent the morning developing new partnership opportunities for the future and looking long range at the partnership by establishing priorities. Of course, we hold these lightly so that they do not blind us to what God has prepared for us. In the afternoon, we went by Happy Day Academy and saw the "new dining rooms." Mary Kabaru has now added the fourth grade and has 189 students. We began discussions on how another floor could be added to Happy Day. This will complete the building. Mary continues to expand the playground for the children. Happy Day is one of the joys of partnership - a God-given vision that has become a reality and is changing lives in Jesus in a challenging area.

Saturday evening we drove to the Rift Valley and to Naivasha. We enjoyed a time by the lake and having an early dinner. The tree picture has a Columbus monkey in it - hard to see. We enjoyed the opportunity to laugh and talk about many things. What a blessing to share this time with Bernard and Mary!

Thursday: The Long, Hot Day

The trip to Dar always begins early in the morning and ends hot and sweaty in Dar Es Salaam. In between, you get to see beautiful scenery, heartbreaking scenery, and always something new. The ride back is always hot as the sun is shining right into the front windshield all the way.

We have found a new stopping place for breakfast - the Mikumi National Park restaurant. There is a watering hole right at the restaurant. This time a bull elephant came and entertained us. Unfortunately, I left my camera in the car and did not get the pictures from Adrian or Sorin. Both of them thoroughly enjoyed the close-up of the elephant. They also got to see cape buffalo.

We hurried after breakfast to get into Dar before the rush hour. We made it. No electricity at the hotel, but they did have water for a shower (a cool shower was appreciated after the long hot ride.)

We enjoyed a great night of sleep. Going to bed early in order to leave for the airport at 2:30 a.m. for a 5 a.m. flight to Nairobi. Just a note, we stayed at the Namnani Hotel in Sinza in Dar Es Salaam. The hotel was a welcomed place to rest. Excellent service, great mattress, hot shower, fairly quiet, and AC with a ceiling fan. This is not a mzungu hotel, but one I enjoy staying in.

Woke up early on Friday morning and headed for the hotel. No problems traveling to Nairobi. Said good-bye to Adrian and Sorin. I enjoyed being with them so much. Most of all, I can see their passion and commitment to serve the orphans and vulnerable children of Kenya and Tanzania.

Wednesday Night: Saying Goodbye

After we arrived in Iringa on Wednesday, Mpeli, Neema and I made one last trip to the farm to say good-bye to the animals and talk about future projects and cover last-minute details. The first picture is of a banana tree blossom. You needed to see the chickens that are not setting. The first tomatoes of the season have been planted recently.

Saying good-bye is always a difficult time for me. The children and staff have a special place in my heart. Adrian and Sorin said good-bye and are looking forward to returning. The worship service was a very special time with everyone.

Thank you for your prayers, encouragement, and support of DBLCH, the DBLCH Farm, and Asante Sana Children's Home. Tomorrow begins the journey back to Dar Es Salaam.

Tuesday and Wednesday: Days of Travel

On Tuesday, we left to visit Pro Africa children in Mbozi and Mbeya. Mbozi is just a few miles from the Zambia border. This was about a 7.5 hour drive. The ride was challenging but not as challenging of the life of Pastor Oscar and his wife. They currently take care of seven orphans in their home. Mrs. Oscar said, "If we can get some cement for the floor of that part of the house, we will be able to help more orphans. Only two of the orphans are helped by Pro Africa. The pastor and his wife take care of the other children. Adrian and Sorin interviewed Ester Halle. Her life as an orphans is very similar to many. She did not pass the national exam in order to go to secondary school. Now, she has major challenges. Does she take the exam again, try to get help going to private school, or go for vocational training? Right now, she is hoping to get a manual sewing machine to provide support for her life (she is 16 years old). The next young lady said that she wanted to be a seamstress. She, too, is trying to get a manual sewing machine. Please pray for both of these girls. Their options are very limited.

Pastor Oscar and his wife stand with a bicycle provided through the first Teleios Ministry Christmas Catalog. The pastor and his wife ride the bike together in caring for the churches he serves. The churches are as far as 1.5 hours away. He expresses thankfulness for the bicycle.

We visited Mpeli's parents and two children in Mbeya. Then, we spent the evening with our great friends, the Nyombi family. Advocate Nyombi is responsible for law and order in the Mbeya district which covers the borders with Malawai and Zambia. Unlike in the U.S., the police force is a national police that covers immigration, traffic, transportation, intelligence (FBI), border control, and regular police matters of law enforcement. We talked with him about expanding the ministry of DBLCH into the Mbeya region.

The night was spent on the hardest mattress that we have ever slept on. Please forgive this negative statement, but I advise against staying at the Forest Hill Motel Mbeya. In fact, this was by far the worst service received at any hotel I have stayed in during my 17 years of visiting East Africa. Interestingly, this was also the most expensive motel in Tanzania that I have stayed in.

We made a few visits the next morning and headed for Iringa. The shots are of a farm, a child carrying a bucket of water across the tracks, a local beer wagon, and of the main road that stretches across Tanzania. We arrived in Iringa about 2 p.m. We had a great trip. What a blessing to see how Pro Africa has changed the lives of many orphans and vulnerable children in Tanzania.

No Electricity and Limited Water

The team is returning to Iringa from Mbeya and in Day 2 of no electricity and limited water. Despite these challenges, the Pro-Africa meetings have produced many positive results with more orphaned and vulnerable children being helped! We praise God that despite not having electricity and having only some water, Floyd, Adrian and Sorin are still able to focus on developing Pro-Africa so that these children can know of God's love for them through provision of food, clothes and shelter.

Please continue to pray for the team as they wrap up their time in Tanzania. Pray, too, that the situations with electricity and water will be resolved by the time they arrive back at the Children's Home, and that it will become a more permanent resolution for the people of Tanzania.

Monday: The Long and Rough Road

We began today with ELECTRICITY! But, the network was down even for the ATM machines in town. No water and no money! By this afternoon, the water was gone. The water company said the water would start flowing in the pipes this afternoon, but no water...and we had stored water on Saturday. So we quickly formed a bucket brigade to carry water from a tank truck to water tanks at the children’s home and Mpeli and Neema’s house. Hopefully, we will have water for a few days again.

We drove to the village area of Kitowa which is 46 kilometers southwest of Iringa (28.5 miles). It took us about 1.5 hours one way for the trip. We shook, bounced, and clanged for at least one hour of the trip. When we got to the village, we were greeted by a group of pastors and children. We visited two of the homes of Pro Africa children. What is amazing to me is how they use every shilling in positive ways — buying chickens, education, and clothes. The pastor wanted us to walk because the homes of the children were “not very far.” Mpeli said, “Not very far, then we better take the car.” We got into the Nissan and road 10 minutes and at least 5 kilometers — “not very far.” Nine more children were interviewed at a pastor’s home.

I think every local official was there. Our appearance (we hope) will encourage the local community and government leaders to allow our friend, the pastor, to begin his dream of a children’s home. He and his family already care for the orphans but want to provide them with a stable and protected environment. Up to this point he has had a difficult time getting the local officials to sign off on the home.

By the way, they served us lunch — outstanding tomatoes over rice. When we were leaving, the highest ranking government leader (a woman) gave me a basket to give to Bonnie. Yes, that's right, she gave me a basket to give to Bonnie. Somehow she knew about Bonnie from area ladies who are going to attend the women's leadership conference that Bonnie will be leading March 30-April 1. I am proud to be known as the husband of Bonnie Parker, International Women's Leadership Conference leader.

After we left Kitowa, we traveled to Kilolo where Onesemo works as the loan officer of National Microfinance Bank. Onesmo is now the Chairman of the Board of Daily Bread Life Children's Home and is the accountant for the ministry. We met the manager, Mr. Freddy and had a discussion about economic empowerment. He was very interested in American political situation.

Can you believe on that rough and bumpy road, Sorin and Adrian fell asleep on the way back. I could not resist a picture - this is not the best, but it was only one that was not blurry from the bumps.

Once we got home, we met Neema. She was tired from her exams today. She has another set of exams tomorrow morning. Jonas had prepared us some excellent pizzas with homemade sauce. Our peace and plumpness was interrupted by the arrival of the water truck. Another bucket brigade was formed and soon we had emptied a 750-liter container. We emptied the container twice filling up the water tanks at Mpeli and Neema’s house. The water truck hose could reach 7000-liter tank at the children’s home (we are so thankful). Sorry no pictures for this exercise — too busy carrying buckets of water.

Sunday: Nzihi Asante Sana Children's Home

We immediately left for Nzihi and the Asante Sana Children’s Home. I am amazed each time I go at how much the children have changed. For the first time, every child had a smile on their face. They were dressed in uniform. The Rev. Pawdre Scout and family arrived in December to lead the Asante Sana Children’s Home for Daily Bread Life Children’s Home. The children, ages two to eight, joined together in a choir and sang songs for us with such joy and pride. This was great. This is not to be negative toward the previous owners prior to DBLCH assuming responsibility in 2009 and full operation of all aspects of the children’s home in December 2010. Now each of the children knows their name. Words and pictures cannot express the change. In fact, the Scout family lives in a home about a ¼ mile away from the children’s home. They are moving to living quarters that have been worked out at the children’s home because they want to be closer to the children and the staff especially at night. Their arrival is a great blessing.

We visited the farm at Asante Sana and, like the DBLCH farm, a shift is taking place there. In November, we introduced an expense tracking method for the farm to determine what are the most effective, productive, and cost efficient ways to utilize the farm. One surprise discovery was that even though pigs bring a significant income, the cost of feed and medicines make them the least effective way to provide for the children’s home. Now, a shift is taking place to chicken and egg production. Also, more goats are being added to the farm. Eggs and goats provide the best return on investment from an economic and nutrition standpoint.

Also, this year has been a bad year for rain in Nzihi. God is providing for some corn, but the corn crop will be greatly reduced at Nzihi. Most of the surrounding farmers are cutting up corn stalks for feed. At least the farm will produce some corn. However, this will not be enough to sustain the pigs, cows, goats, and chickens. Since cows and goats can graze, this made the shift even more important away from pigs. We are not "loosing money" on the pigs. The farm is just not making as much as previously believed once all the costs were figured into the process. Enough of agricultural economics for today. We had a great time at Nzihi.

Sunday was a full day but a great day.

Sunday: Kidetete Worship

This post is a day late because of no electricity yesterday. At Kidetete Baptist Church, the power of God’s Spirit was definitely there. For Sorin and Adrian, this was their first Tanzania worship experience and the worship was in the village. The sanctuary was full of many children and people with some standing outside. (I included a picture of the outside of the Kidetete Nursery School and Church from Saturday. There are always children around the church and school.)

This was a special day. Three babies were being dedicated to the Lord, we had the Lord’s Supper, and Adrian preached on “Worry” — great message. Sorin led in prayer for the baby dedication and I (Floyd) led the Lord’s Supper. Sorin held the children and prayed for each one and the family. Sorin prayed in Romania. During the service, we had three languages spoken: Swahili, English, and Romanian.

Four young people who had made decisions to follow Jesus during the week were presented to the church for prayer and encouragement. This was a very special time and a great time of celebrating the transformation of their lives.

The service lasted about two and half hours, but it did not seem that long. Sorin and Adrian got to see the church fellowship dancing, singing, and glorifying God. Sediki did a great job in leading the music for worship. Neema surprised us by singing a song that she had composed. Sorin very much enjoyed the music.

A picture is included of the offering. You see the greens, corn, beans, eggplant, and peas in the picture. Actually there were three offerings which was a little confusing at first. The first offering was for evangelism support which helps to provide some funds for Sediki. The second offering was for general gifts to the church, and the third offering was for the building fund. Kidetete has been buying stones, bricks, and cement little by little in order to complete the expansion.

I always like the way they end the service at Kidetete. Those in the church go out one by one forming a circle. Everyone who leaves shakes the hand of the people already outside. I assure you regardless of age, gender, or skin color every hand is shaken. I hope to have a few more pictures of Sunday’s worship tomorrow.

In the afternoon, Adrian and Sorin interviewed the children who are supported by Pro Africa from the Iringa area.

Pro Africa Day

Today was a very special day for Cigher Sorin, pastor from Abrud, Romania. He and his family have sponsored a young boy, Frank, through Pro Africa. The grandmother was featured in our December newsletter and I wrote about her in the December blog. She lives above the children’s home on the mountain. The Cigher family collected some toys and clothes for Frank and Sorin brought them today. Also, they gave them some food. In fact, he bought some beans, rice and other food and took to Frank and his grandmother. Before he gave the food, he was asking questions. Sorin asked what do you prepare each day for food. The grandmother said, “I had hoped to cook beans today but we have no food today.” Sorin gave her the box of beans, rice, and other food. Sorin was so happy to meet Frank. He gave Frank a picture of his family and shared with him that his family prayed for Frank every day.

Of course, I could not resist a picture of Adrian catching some rays this morning as he worked on his computer.

Adrian, Mpeli, Neema, and I met about Pro Africa projects. Pro Africa now has reached 80 children sponsored in Tanzania through Daily Bread Life Children’s Home. After lunch, we went to Kidetete and visited with orphans and vulnerable children sponsored by Pro Africa. This was a great time of hearing how lives had been changed through the ministry. Adrian and Sorin really enjoyed talking with the children and their guardians. Pro Africa provides support for food, education, or other needs for the children and young people. Pro Africa was started by Adrian Giorgiov after he visited Kenya several years ago as part of a Teleios Ministry team.

We visited the DBLCH farm. The rains have turned the farm green. The first bananas were harvested from the farm -- even now banana tree shoots are coming up for new trees. Right now there are onions, eggplant, pumpkin, greens, cabbage, okra, beans, and tomatoes planted. There were also sunflowers. The corn crop is looking very good. The grass is tall and growing. Three pigs were missing from the farm. Two were sold to provide income for the farm and a third one was sacrificed on the altar of the children home’s table.

One big change is that we are moving out of the pig business. The pigs bring a lot of money but the cost of feeding them and medicine is very high. Now, we know after a couple of years of both that more money is made from goats than pigs. I think there was some discouragement when five of the new born pigs died from bad feed. This caused a setback. There's not that problem with the goats. Slowly the farm is moving away from pigs to goats. The cows are doing great as they mature and we wait the birth of our first calf.

The day ended with a great worship time with the DBLCH. Many of you have heard of talk of Jonas. He comes and helps with cooking when a group visits Mpeli and Neema. Today, I have included a picture of Jonas. He sends his warmest greetings to all his Teleios friends. Also, I was able to catch Yusta making pancakes this morning.

Thank all of you for your prayers. Tonight we had rain and in the distance the lightning is putting on a show behind the mountains. It is a wonderful “light” show.

Tomorrow afternoon, my luggage arrives by bus from Dar Es Salaam. One piece of luggage enjoyed a two-day stay in Nairobi or Amsterdam. The other piece of luggage enjoyed a holiday in Dar Es Salaam for a day waiting on its traveling companion to arrive. Tomorrow night, they are to arrive in Iringa.

Please remember Neema in your prayers. She has her semester exams at the university on Monday.

At Home with Daily Bread Life Children's Home

The safari from Greenville to Daily Bread Life Children’s Home was another adventure in God’s provision. In Atlanta on my way to JFK in New York for the flight to Europe, big surprise, I feel asleep before the plane left the gate. I woke up to the words, “cross check for arrival”. I said to myself, “Wow! I slept all the way to JFK.” Then I looked out the window and the view looked just like Atlanta. We never left Atlanta due to mechanical problems. They were to be fixed soon. I knew then that I would miss my flight in JFK to Amsterdam, to Nairobi (where I was meeting Adrian and Sorin from Romania) and finally to Dar Es Salaam. The flight attendant said they would see what would happen. After a few moments, I called the Delta Sky Miles representative (flying a lot does have its advantages). A wonderful lady, Phyllis Lewis, in Cincinnati, quickly accessed the situation and arranged a flight out of Atlanta to Amsterdam. She said, “Dr. Parker, get off the plane now and go to the Delta agent at the gate.” I knew that once I left the plane that I would not get back on. What about my luggage? She said, “Dr. Parker, get off the plane, stay on the phone with me but get off the plane.” (Bonnie, you would be so proud of me. I got all my junk together and did not leave a thing. Not one book left, Meg.)

I got off the plane—it was hectic for about 15 minutes but I had a flight from Atlanta to Amsterdam. There I met a lady from Volunteers in Medical Mission—a great ministry out of Seneca, SC. The group was headed to Southern Sudan. Also, I was able to share with a lady who was headed to India to see her father who was dying of cancer.

On the flight from Amsterdam to Nairobi we were late leaving Amsterdam making my connections in Nairobi to meet Adrian and Sorin questionable. But, I sat next to an Agricultural Economist headed to Southern Sudan. He was going to help the new government set up an agricultural strategy for getting the refugees back to the villages and farming. We had a great visit and as he talked about what was needed in East Africa. He described Teleios Ministry in its approach to investing in indigenous dreams. He was very interested in our farming in Tanzania.

In Nairobi, the proverbial running through airports took place. I went to the transfer desk and was told, “I am sorry the check in has closed if you do not have a boarding pass.” I said that I had to get on that plane and I needed boarding pass. The Kenyan airways agent called two or three people and said, “You must hurry and they will let you on the plane.” So with no boarding pass I headed to the gate (last on in the terminal). I made it. But I did not see Adrian and Sorin. In fact, they arrived after I did because of being slow coming through immigrations at the airport.

We were on our way to Dar Es Salaam. Ephraim, pastor in Dar, and Mpeli Mwaisumbe, Daily Bread Life Children’s Home met us at the airport. For the second trip in a row, my luggage decided to stay a few days extra on the trip. No problem! I was almost home. A hot shower, four hour sleep, and a comfortable bed at the Namnani—it doesn’t get any better than this. We left early Friday morning for Iringa. Saw my friends at the Kobel station in Chalinzi and had beef soup, chapatti, and samosas. UMMM! There is nothing like eating your way across Tanzania.

Sorin and Adrian were amazed at the differences between Tanzania and Kenya. Sorin had never been to Africa. He and Adrian were in Kenya with Teleios Partner, Bernard Mwangi. They had done a safari but had seen no elephants. Sorin, a Romanian pastor from Abud, wanted to see them. The Lord provided with a herd of elephants in the Mikumi National Park as we drove through on our way to Iringa. It was a great safari.

For those who travel to Iringa, the road is almost finished and really nice with the new pavement and being re-worked.

As I have always said, there is nothing that compares with the greeting received by the children of Daily Bread Life Children’s Home. Adrian’s and Sorin’s eyes filled with tears as the children sang welcome and surrounded them with hugs and holding hands. We worshipped together, singing and dancing praising the Lord.

Maka, Sam, Betha, and Bonnie (Mpeli and Neema’s children) are doing great. I am now home with my family in Tanzania.

So many stories already to tell. The light of Jesus Christ that shines from DBLCH is changing a city and country. Just to say, that a young man came Friday night to Mpeli and Neema’s house that had been led to the follow Jesus the night before. We were praising the Lord last night.

Three-Country Journey Begins In Tanzania

Floyd has arrived in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania! He, Adrian Giorgiov and Soran will travel to Iringa on Friday. Once there they will visit in Iringa, Kidetete and Nzihi working toward developing a Pro-Africa program in Tanzania.

Please pray for these meetings and for the development of this much-needed program Also, continue to pray for safety as they all travel.

Saturday: An Incredible Journey Ends

At times comical, at times unbelievable, at times rewarding, but most of the time was spent sitting. We left Dar Es Salaam as planned around 12:45 AM on December 17. Bonnie and I were able to get an empty seat between us on the flight for more sleep space.

When we got to Amsterdam, snow was coming down and everything was white. Other than freezing temperatures and snow coming down, nothing out of the ordinary. No flights were being canceled. So, in hope we went to board our Delta flight to Atlanta scheduled. We boarded the plane around 9:30 AM. Soon, with excitement we began pushed back from the gate and went to be deiced. That's when the fun began. Time we left the gate and moved to the taxiway, Amsterdam airport shut down. After a period time, the pilot let us know we were once again heading for Atlanta as soon as we were deiced. Well, time we got to be deiced, they closed the airport again. We sat at deicing for a few hours. Delta executives decided to bring the plane back to the terminal. Pilot and crew did not have enough time to fly it across the ocean. So we headed back to the Terminal. By now we had been on the plane about 6 hours. We literally taxied around and around the airport. Finally after 8 hours on the plane we were given a gate. We got to the gate and the bridge would not fit the plane (747 bridge only--who knew!). The pilot said the cabin crew would assist us. The head steward of the cabin crew came on the loud speaker and said, "We don't know what is going on either; we don't know how we will help." Then, they said we were going to get steps. Well, the pilot came back on and told us the steps were frozen in a snow bank so we couldn't get off the plane. At this point, now, 9 hours on the plane, we were going to a "remote" gate and be bused back to the terminal. Then, the tow "truck" was somewhere and had to come. By, 9.5 hours on the plane the tow "truck" finally showed up and towed us literally across a highway so that you could not see the terminal. Finally, a little around 8 PM we boarded buses. You will like this, it is freezing cold and snowing. The bring one bus and it fills up. They did not have the other bus waiting. The people after us had to wait for the bus to come in the freezing weather. The buses took us back to the Terminal. The pilot who was a lot more ticked off that us, was really frustrated. The crew did a great job. The pilot told us that he had been informed by Delta that KLM would have a representative to help us at the terminal when we got off the bus. After 10.5 hours, we arrived back at the terminal and never left the airport. You guessed it. We got off the bus and no one was there. We were just dumped off the bus. Went upstairs and the transfer desk closed. There was thousands waiting in line. KLM just closed down. They did not know what to do so they just closed. So, at 9 PM, Bonnie and I began to figure out our strategy for "survival". We went to the KLM Lounge but the staff (one KLM service rep in particular had a meltdown and the whole lounge was closed). Everyone was sent out. We found two empty seats on a bench. I went looking for food (even McDonald's closed and would not let people sit there area after closing. Now, the whole airport is shutdown for travel and thousands are there. I passed back by the KLM Lounge and it had reopened. Bonnie and I were excited.

The Hallelujah news is that we got showers at 11 PM on Friday night. KLM was going to close the lounge at 11 PM (regular procedure). But then decided to keep the lounge open--I really don't think anyone would have left. One funny thing, the customer service supervisor came on the speaker and said, "Don't ask us any more questions. We are going home. We will not answer any more questions." We got to rest. Michal had worked to rebook us on a flight through Detroit. The pilot said the same plane would fly on Saturday morning with same seats. But no one knew--not KLM, not Delta representatives, no one.

This morning, Bonnie and I went to the Atlanta flight like the pilot said first. Sure enough when my boarding pass printed for the "Detroit" flight on seats where on the Atlanta flight. It was late three hours, but we finally left. Oh, on hour delay because KLM/airport forgot to put food on the plane. So we had to wait on the catering service. The pilot was really funny. We got deiced and took off for Atlanta. People were clapping, the pilot came on and said, "People we are going home." One pilot had said earlier, "Folks, I promise you were are going to Atlanta today."

I must say that the Delta people did a great job. KLM was very disappointing. Usually they lead the way in customer service. But, they had no sense of improvising. Throughout the Amsterdam airport, you could see they were totally overwhelmed.

Bonnie and I arrived in Atlanta at 3:15 PM. The Delta agent did a good job getting us on the first flight to Greenville. We arrive in Greenville just before 6 PM today. Oh, our luggage was not so fortunate. We left Mpeli and Neema's house at 3:30 AM Eastern Standard time on December 16. We arrived at our home at 7 PM on December 18. So after 63.5 hours, the incredible journey ended.

I end with this story. Sitting next to us on the 10 hours joy ride around Amsterdam airport, was a young man living in Dar Es Salaam. He is a business man and a serious Christian. We made a new friend for partnership. He and his wife had only been in Tanzania since July. The strange thing was that Bonnie and I referred him to people who could help him. Also, we talked about how to Be serious about living our faith in Jesus in the marketplace. Mpeli will be in touch with him. Our God is amazing in all things how he puts people together in the strangest situations to accomplish his purposes. I don't know all of the reasons or purposes of the people we met on this incredible journey. But, I know that God is not a God of the coincidence. We are looking forward to what He has prepared from these new relationships.

Thursday and Friday: Coming Home

We said goodbye to the children and headed for Iringa airport to catch Flightlink flight to Dar Es Salaam at 12:45 PM. The picture is of Bonnie getting off the 12 Passenger plane in Dar. We made it to the International Airport in Dar around 3 PM. Mpeli had arrange a taxi but it was caught in the famous Dar traffic jam. So Bonnie and got our own taxi--hakuna matata. We decided to go on to the airport. We could not check in so we waited outside the airport from 3 until after 9 PM to check in. I, Floyd, am so proud of Bonnie. We actually connected with some great people some Tanzanians and some Americans. We saw Mrs. Nyombi from Mbeya waiting for her daughter to come in to the airport. Check out Todd and Ann Ziems from Michigan now live in Dar-www.son-international.org (especially all our partners with interest in clean water). Here we are now waiting in Dar Es Salaam for our 12:45 am flight to Amsterdam.

The last photo is of a lady who is keeping her orphaned nephew. A very poor family with a great story of the difference a chicken can make. ProAfrica, a Romanian NGO, founded by Adrian Giorgiov and his family, Oradea, Romania, connects sponsors with vulnerable children in Kenya and Tanzania. Through ProAfrica's partner in Tanzania, Daily Bread Life Children's Home, over 50 orphan and vulnerable children are helped. One of them, Frank lives with his great aunt. She received funds from ProAfrica that enabled her to purchase a chicken. Now, three months later she has 14 chickens. She wept as she shared how this had changed their lives. Now they have eggs to eat and to sell.

Tuesday: Back to Iringa

We began early in the morning making our way back to Iringa. But first a couple of pictures of the hotel. One interesting part of the hotel, The Bearco, was the stuffed animal trophies on the walls. This buffalo watched you as you ate breakfast every morning. Bonnie is standing at the front gate with the impala crossing above.

The next pictures are from our journey back to Iringa. The first is a man and his family planting corn. Then, plowing the old fashion way with two bulls and hand plow. The final picture is what Mpeli and I refer to as our "Rest Area". Yes, I has a nice place to pull of the road, plenty of trees and bush, not dangerous, excellent rest area.

When we arrived in Iringa we were able to meet with our great friends, the Nyombis. We have invited them to visit us in May 2011. They are a great friends of Daily Bread Life Ministry. He currently serves as the Advocate General of the Mbeya District (he is responsible for security and police issues in the district). Please pray that all will work out so that they can join us in May. Back at home, we had a great lunch prepared by our great friend and chef, Jonas. Then, Bonnie and the DBL Drama Team (all the children) prepared the Christmas Drama for tomorrow's Christmas celebration. King Herod was enjoying being fanned. The wisemen were getting their gifts in order for Mary and Joseph. One funny part centered on the baby Jesus. The children selected a mzungu (white) doll with red hair. Bonnie asked then about the choice. Since she had been teaching them early about human anatomy and reproduction, he asked how an African couple could have such a child. The children laughed and immediately went with the a more appropriate doll for Mary and Joseph.

Yusta and the others staff were preparing the Children's Home for the celebration. It is going to be a great day.

After worship, we had "foot measuring." Several of the children were not able to be fitted from all the shoes that we brought with us. So, their feet were measured on a piece of white paper. Foot on the paper, trace around the foot, write then name, and tomorrow we buy the right size shoes. Gives new meaning to comparison shopping.

Tomorrow will be quite a blog. We will cover the Christmas celebration. Hopefully we will post tomorrow morning before we leave Iringa on our safari home.

Flight from Iringa to Dar Es Salaam leaves at 12:45 PM--arrives Dar at 3:15 PM. We change terminals and wait until 12:45 AM on the 17th. Then, we begin our safari from Dar Es Salaam to Amsterdam to Atlanta to Greenville. Your prayers for a timely safari home are deeply appreciated.

Monday: Mwanzo Ilolo

Monday afternoon, Mpeli, Neema, Bonnie, and I visited the village of Ilolo about 40 minutes southwest of Mbeya off the highway to Zambia . Mpeli and Neema had visited the village about a month earlier at the request of a businessman who had connections to the area regarding orphan acre.

Ilolo is a newly formed village of about 550 people. The village sits on top of a series of mountain ridges and is about 4 kilometers long. The village had previously been under the authority of a larger village some distance away. In the last year, they organized themselves to try and find ways to meet critical needs for their community. We met with the chairman of the village, a government representative, the local chief, the village council, and others (not sure who they were other than interested in our being there.). The businessman served as our host and we discovered that he had a farm at the edge of the village. Their presentation of the village history, needs, and specific commitments to transform their village was amazing and unparalleled in sharing their vision.

They had four main concerns. 1. They have no school in the village. We clocked the distance from the village to the school and it was 13.5 kilometers or about 8.5 miles. The children of the village (more than 50) walk to school each day 8.5 miles in the morning and 8.5 miles in the afternoon. As Bonnie said, “I won’t do it. How can they learn anything.” These primary age children leave before dawn and return home after dark at night. The village is making bricks to build a school but were seeking help with someone to teach and resources (similar to the Kidetete primary school started in 2005).

2. They do not have any type of health clinic. Honestly, we are not sure how far the closest one is. Our guess is about 25 minutes by car. They have been making bricks to build a clinic but are seeking help in establishing at least some type of health center for the community—even a part time nurse.

3. The great need is a viable water source. Currently, there are two springs located at the base of the mountains. The springs are approximately at each end of the village. The women walk at least 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) down the mountain to the springs. That is if you live closest. From our observation, the distance is considerably more for most of the village. The hard part is the 2.5 miles back up the mountain carrying water. They are asking for help in establishing a well or some type of way to get water closer to the village (a well is the best idea). The village does not have an evangelical church. This is where the business man was concerned. He knew of Mpeli and Neema’s work with DBL Children Home and the work in Kidetete in planting a church, the well, and orphan care. The businessman said, "Mpeli said to us,'this woman carrying those branches has already gone to get water today. Imagine her day is finished after she gets water and sticks.'" The picture below the woman carrying the sticks actually shows a woman and a child carrying water from one of the springs to her house on top of the ridge. You barely can detect a red spot next to the green grove halfway up the mountain.

4. The fourth concern are the 35 orphans who live in the village.

Please pray for the village and these concerns. We made no commitment only that we would pray specifically about assisting them in development of the village and the planting of a church. In every way this resembles the beginning of our work with Mpeli and Neema over five years ago. Unlike Mpeli and Neema’s situation in Kidetete six years ago, the village is very serious about addressing the issues and transformation of lives. The chairman said, “Just knowing that you (Mpeli and Neema) would bring Mzungus (white people) from America to hear our story and see our village is a great encouragement to us. We pray for the help but if not we know that someone else cares and knows our story.”

Monday: The Family

Monday morning we drove back to Tykuyu with Mpeli’s father, James Mwaisumbe. The Mwaisumbe family comes from a village, Mysoka about 30 minutes from Tykuru on a rather challenging road. Actually, part of the road is not for cars only bicycles or walking. Mpeli managed to straddle the path and get us there.

Mpeli’s father’s brother is the head or “father” of the larger family. The best way to describe his position is that of wise man, elder, ruler, decision maker, and the one that you go to bet blessing for marriage or any life decision. He is the mediator and final decision in all disputes. He is called, “father”. Mpeli’s family’s father is 87 years old and James Mwaisumbe’s older brother. He belongs to the “last church”. He professes faith in Jesus Christ and is a member of the “last church.” The Last Church is a native church that allows for various tribal practices such polygamy. Recently, the Last Church no longer allows the consumption of local beer/low grade moonshine. Father had two wives until his first wife died lest than a year ago. His children range in age from close to sixty to middle teens. One of the pictures shows three main buildings with Mpeli’s SUV sitting in the middle of them. The one on the left (facing the picture0 is the second wives home, the one on the right was the first wife’s home, and the middle one is Father’s house. Father and his younger sons asked some great questions about what the Bible said about polygamy. Mpeli quickly turned those questions to me to answer. This was a great opportunity to share biblical teaching and enourage them to be true followers of Jesus and to be true to His Word. As a result of this discussion, Father asked if we would return to teach more about God’s Word and the Gospel for all of the people of the area.

Mpeli and, then, two of the younger sons demonstrated how to beat the family ceremonial drums and some dancing. The large tree picture is a fig tree—that’s right a fig tree. That tree is huge and loaded with figs.

One interesting tradition for the family is that once a boy gets about twelve to fourteen, he builds his own little house to live in. He leaves his mother’s house and builds his own out of bamboo and mud for walls and straw for the roof. Father’s farm had several of these little bandas (houses).

A large tree was cut down on the farm and being cut up into boards. The two pictures try to capture the art of sawing the boards. A hole is dug about six feet deep. One of the men is in the hole and pulls the saw down. The other man stands on top of the log and pulls the saw up. The photos could not capture have precise their sawing was in keeping the width of the board.

We had a great time with the brothers getting together and seeing very traditional tribal life. After we left Mysoka and made some purchases in the town for Father and the family, we headed back to Mbeya to see Jane, Neema’s sister, and her husband. We enjoyed a good hot cup of coffee, laughing, and listening to the stories of their family life. Jane and her husband have two children and also have brought two orphans into the family.

Sunday: The Love Church

Sunday morning began really early at 5 AM leaving Mtemba Beach for Mbeya in order to make it in time to speak and preach at Upendo Baptist Church.

The first picture is the lights of the fisherman on the lake. They go out at night fishing and the lights reflect on the late. This was a beautiful sight as we woke and began our journey.

Along the way, we bought mangoes, avocados, and bananas. Here is Neema loading bananas on the Nissan. Along with our purchases, we visited Mpeli's cousin. We ended our journey with a hot bowl of beef soup and chapati at a local "restaurant".

Sunday morning we worshipped at the Upendo Baptist Church, Mbeya. Mpeli and Neema planted the church sponsored by his father's church, Calvary Baptist Church. The pastor has a great name, John Bunyan. He was given this name before he ever was called to be a pastor. Pastor John is a great evangelistic and preacher with an outreach ministry that works in the Congo (not the safe part either).

Bonnie taught church Sunday School using the song of Mary in Luke 1. After teaching, she answered questions from the congregation. This was a great time.

Floyd preached during the morning service. What was interesting was an offering was taken up to help the church women attend a women's conference in Dar Es Salaam. The initial offering was short of what was needed. The pastor said, "we need 50,000 TSH (Tanzanian Shillings)more. We don't want our ladies going without water. Mbeya to Dar Es Salaam is at least a 12 hour bus ride.

After the morning worship we had a common meal with the pastor, first time visitors, and other guests.

In the afternoon, we had a great meal with the pastor of Calvary Baptist Church and his family. He is a bivocational pastor doing business as a butcher. His wife is great cook and tremendous care giver.

Saturday: Mtemba Beach

The pictures are from an afternoon of rest at Mtemba Beach on Lake Malawi. We really enjoyed the beach and the boat ride. Just a note, I did not have any shorts and its warm at the beach. So, I took my trusty pocket knife and cut off the legs of a pair of blue jeans. The boatman paddled us for a mile in one direction across the corner of the lake and back. We were shocked at his ability to paddle for so long and so far. Fishing is the major source of income. The main catch in the nets was a sardine looking fish.

Friday and Saturday

Friday was a day of waiting as Mpeli and Neema helped with a funeral arrangements of a neighbor. In the afternoon, we left for Mbeya. Mpeli was not feeling well so I (Floyd) drove halfway until he was feeling better. Actually, I think it was because my driving was a concern for him.

Saturday our schedule was once again rearranged. We picked up Mpeli's father and headed for Neema's parents. Some of you know Harry Massanjala. We left Mpeli's father at his shamba. Also, on the shamba is where Mpeli's younger brother is buried.

The Harry Massanjala family. We always enjoy visiting Harry and have been accepted into the family.

This area is Tukuyu. A very green and productive area. The elevation is high and has tea fields. The growing season is year round with rich soil, plenty of rain, and ideal climate. The area is near the Malawi border at the Lake Malawi.

A local oil press that uses sap from what appears to be a palm type tree to produce cooking oil. This shows how everything is locally produced using a great deal of invention.

The next three pictures are of the cocoa plant (chocolate). The prices are high now and its a excellent source of income for the farmers in the Kyela area. The first picture is of the tree, then the cocoa pod that holds the seeds or beans, and the final picture of the beans drying on sheets. Also, Kyela is well known for its rice.
